Question 1

How do we know if our church stained glass needs re-leading?

Accepted Answer

Signs that stained glass windows require re-leading include visible bowing, bulging, deflection from wind load, daylight visible around glass edges, white powder (lead oxidation), or cracked lead came joints. Traditional lead matrices typically last 70 to 100 years before requiring full studio conservation.

Question 2

What is the church stained glass restoration process?

Accepted Answer

The restoration process begins with an on-site structural condition assessment. Once approved, windows are documented, carefully extracted, and weather-tight temporary glazing is installed. In the studio, panels are submerged to soften historic putty, dismantled, cleaned, re-assembled with new virgin lead came, soldered at every joint, waterproof-cemented, and reinstalled with protective glazing.

Question 3

Does Statesville Stained Glass provide on-site sanctuary assessments?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Statesville Stained Glass Services provides comprehensive on-site structural assessments and committee reports for churches, historic landmarks, and residential estates across North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and the Eastern Seaboard.

Question 4

What is protective glazing and why is ventilation required?

Accepted Answer

Protective exterior glazing shields historic leaded stained glass from weather, hail, and vandalism. Proper isothermal ventilation is critical to prevent heat buildup and condensation between the protective glazing and stained glass, which would otherwise accelerate lead deterioration and wood frame rot.
